Catawba College's athletic teams are known as the Catawba Indians, name inspired by the Catawba Indian tribe that was native to the original location of the school, which compete in the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Conference, in 18 sports, for both men and women, including in cross country, soccer, tennis, lacrosse, swimming and volleyball.
The distinctive colors of the Catawba Indians are navy blue and white and their mascot is Cat-U.
